A solid historical read on the history of democratic socialism, covering movements across the globe and in America. Well-written and engaging; a must to understand the politics of our age.

A future edition of the book could benefit from expanding the theme of the first chapter: the positives democratic socialism could bring for the average citizen. Greater time spent on the why a person should advocate for democratic socialism and the policies that would be implemented would make for an even more persuasive volume.

A history of Democratic Socialism and a call to action. Bhaskar advocates for something slightly to the left of the Nordic model

i really wish i had enjoyed it more! it honestly just wasn’t cohesive, and while i really enjoyed the first chapter, the book just wasn’t what i was looking for. i assumed it would be somewhat of a blueprint for how to transform our current society, but it was mostly history with few parallels drawn to the present. i also found sunkara’s rhetoric to be a bit class reductionist, which was disappointing.

What a letdown.
This is not a manifesto. It is, for the very most part, a history of (the failures of) political socialism, followed by a hopeful endorsement of Bernie Sanders & Jeremy Corbyn (and we all know how that went). The “programme” in the last few pages seems no more than a string of unfinished afterthoughts. Funny how Iittle time it takes for some books to become obsolete.

Provides a very easy to follow and concise history of the left and makes a compelling case for its future.

A practical and funny guide to socialism in the 21st century. The How we win chapter punches the hardest. Explaining what is power in communities and that while it's separate from election wins a people's party is near essential. Loose networks of militants and activists fall short of the broad support needed for lasting change. Fighting in the trenches of working-class struggles is important but it needs to be on the front-foot in building a counter-hedgemony that is common sense to common people.

The bulk of the book is history of socialist struggles of the past hundred years. For me and many other readers it was apparently a bit of a bore. I certainly skimmed this as I was already familiar.
