I can't say much beyound the fact that I am quite confused. I know the story progressed in such a mystical way for some reason and that we must accept it but I am lost on that reason. Yet I can't help but feel gratified at the ending regardless. Moreover, the accepting the madness or rolling with the adventure seems to be a reacurring theme in these classics such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. As much as I'd like to read that one for the fun, I kinda hope it is not like Mary Poppins. Or maybe it is that I wasn't expecting Mary Poppins to be quite, well- Mary Poppins. At times she seemed quite stern and forceful with the children then she would become a little more docile and in the chapter with Bert, she seemed a whole nother person..odd very odd

I think it was hard for me to get past how mean Mary Poppins is and so very different from the movie.

There were some things about this book that I really loved and other things that I didn't but I can't really be fair to the book given that I read it after having viewed the Disney movie at least two dozen times. I couldn't help but compare the two by both plot and characters and Disney definitely creates a kinder and more likeable Mary Poppins (not to mention a much more frequently appearing Bert). But PL Travers is a wonderful writer and there are some stories in her books that don't occur in the movie at all that are definitely worth a read.

By the normal standard with which I rate books, I should be giving this 3 stars, but because it’s Mary Poppins and it’s so ingrained in my soul, I’m bumping it up to 4 stars.
I was surprised at how much this original version of the story reminded me of the Wizard of Oz or Chronicles of Narnia, rather than the Mary Poppins universe I know and love.
Also, for what it’s worth, I was not a fan of Sophie Thompson’s narration in the audiobook version.

A very sweet book, and the illustrations in this edition were lovely. I don't remember if I've ever read the book, though I'm familiar with the movie and the musical. I enjoyed several of the stories that were not included in either the movie or the musical. It was also interesting to read, now knowing the PL Travers was not thrilled with the Disney adaptation.
