A story of Jane Goodall as a child when she explored her backyard and fell in love with nature.
Quintessential Patrick McDonnell illustrations are paired with more scientifically-accurate illustrations to accompany the text.

Really wonderful children's book about the childhood of Jane Goodall. While I think this would be inspiring for all children I think it would be especially so for girls. This is a story about a girl who lives her life in nature, and dreams of going to Africa to help animals as a young child. Jane makes this dream of an adventurous career come true even though most of the people in her life thought it was impossible. The illustrations are lovely and include drawings done by Jane herself when she was young. An afterward talks a bit about the Roots and Shoots program that the Jane Goodall Institute developed. I love that Jane's favourite toy as a child was a stuffed monkey. It seems that she was destined to do the work she did and this short book goes far in introducing children to the love of aniimals and nature that Jane herself exhibits.

Audience: Ages 3-7, boys and girls who love animals and the outdoors, those who may have been told at some point that their dreams will never become reality
Appeal: With gorgeous and understated illustrations, it paints a perfect picture of Jane Goodall as a child and how her passion for animals developed into her lifelong dream and career. This would be a fantastic book to be read aloud, and the notes and drawings from Jane herself would spark great discussions about children's dreams as well as what every person can contribute to help the planet and our wildlife.

The best book for those animal lovers, especially the girls. Jane grew up watching the spiders and the birds and the squirrels with her stuffed chimpanzee, Jubilee. She watched, she drew, she climbed trees, "it was a magical world full of joy and wonder, and Jane felt very much a part of it." Jane grows up to be Dr. Jane Goodall, with great photos and a note at the end from Dr. Goodall herself.
