The Wrath & the Dawn was different from what I thought it would be, but I enjoyed it quite a bit!

Shazi is such an interesting character, and I really enjoyed reading her POV. I think the other characters could have used a tiny bit more fleshing out, but I liked them all quite a bit.

Writing: 4 stars

Plot: 3 stars

As a note, I’m glad I switched to the physical book because the narration of the audiobook made it hard for me to tell who was talking.

I have mixed feelings about this book.

It is a commendable reimagining of Arabian Nights, the story of Scheherazade.

However, several little things bothered me about it. Spoilers ahead.

The story starts with Shahrzad (apparently the persian version of Scheherazade, according to wikipedia) going to the palace to assassinate her friend's killer. Normally, this sort of thing would absolutely delight me, but in this case it quickly becomes clear that Shahrzad's bold actions are foolhardy in the extreme. She arrives with no actual plan on how to go about assassinating someone. I'd have expected a smart heroine to become proficient with a knife and sword, and if that wasn't an option due to time constraints, at least show up with a dagger and some poison to show that the slightest bit of forethought went into her rash decision. Shahrzad brought neither.

So as she's a sitting duck in her enemy's hands, she's hoping that, what, her beauty and storytelling is going to keep her alive long enough for her to figure out how to kill him? Please let me off the stupid train...

Then, to annoy me further, the relationship between Shahrzad and the Caliph progresses too quickly, probably to make up for the fact that Shahrzad has no legit way to keep herself alive longer than a night or two. After the third night or something, the Caliph apparently realizes that she's god's gift to mankind or whatever because he decides to throw away the sacrifice he made of all the other girls to spare her.

Shahrzad, for her part, spends most of her time feeling conflicted and thinks to herself several times, ok, i'm going to kill him now, yet in keeping with her inability to conceive of something concrete, she has half-hearted notions to shoot him every so often but never comes up with an actual plan of action. What ends up staying her hand? Well, he's sooo dreamy and really, there must be some excellent reason why he's murdered seventy plus girls, right? He can't be too bad, not when he makes her feel all warm and gooey on the inside... Blegh.

Ok i'm being a tad too cynical. It really was heartwarming to see their romance overcome the odds against them, and the descriptions of the court are lovely. I particularly enjoyed Jalal, who's devilish grin managed to transcend the pages and steal my affections.

Overall, I'd say it was well done, but it just didn't quite meet my expectations.

Listening Soundtrack:

though this book is saturated with things i hate (an indecisive main character (pack it up america singer), no plot to be found, and the worst insta-love i have ever read (it took ONE day)), it provided me with the escape i needed, hence the extra 2 stars.

“Some things exist in our lives for but a brief moment. And we must let them go on to light another sky.”
― Renee Ahdieh, The Wrath and the Dawn

The Wrath & The Dawn honestly deserves all the stars, but for the sake of being more of a critical reviewer, I'm rating it JUST below a 5. I am extremely happy that I picked this up! It's Red Queen and Illuminae, all over again! This has to be one of my favourite books, and I can't wait to read the second instalment.

Renee Ahdieh wrote this novel elegantly and quite descriptively, which in opinion worked wonders with the diverse set of characters and plot. I don't even know how one could come up with such an intriguing story! I'm a sucker for YA Fantasy & Sci-Fi, and Ahdieh made me even more obsessed.

I haven't read a good Romance in a long time, to be honest. Now I can say that the long wait was worth it! For those inlove with Fantasy & Romance packed books, this one's definitely for you!

I still can't seem to gather my thoughts well enough to write a good, long review. Just read it.
