Solid. A bit too tightly focused on specific characters by the end, when it would have been nice for more world building, which is the focus in the first half.

Somehow, despite being interested in the story, this was so boring I had a hard time getting through it. The writing style is so plodding and clinically written that I never engaged with the characters. This was an intentional choice, since the majority of the story is told from the perspective of the Ship's AI, but it did not work for me. I wanted to hear more about the personal stories and the interactions, less about lists and statistics. I listened to this on audio, it's possible when you can skim the lists instead of hearing each item that the book might be more enjoyable.

I feel like this work is consistent with the other work I read by Kim Stanley Robinson, Red Mars. If you liked that one you will probably enjoy this as well.

I really enjoyed most of this book; I found the characters to be compelling and understandable, the writing engaging, and the science believable. The only thing holding it back from 5 stars is that the last 10% needed some editing. But I genuinely enjoyed this book.

So good! In fact a liked it better than 2312, which this book takes many cues from but seems not to be a strict sequel. It has much more narrative momentum and less wandering. The narrator is by far the most interesting part, really well done, and I think quite innovative.
