Reading this helped me understand how the True Detective series came to be. There are similarities. The moving forward and backwards with time is a main one. I do like how well the author describes and develops the feel for place. The characters are flawed but understandable. Roy worked as a bagman for a NOLA wise guy. He was an orphan who had grown up in foster care. He finds out that he is to be the target of a hit by his own boss and turns the tables on the assassins. While escaping from the ambush, he brings along a scared young girl as he heads towards Galveston. They make a detour in Lake Charles to pick up her younger sister and the 3y/o child joins the journey. Trying to escape the life that they were in proves to be difficult and the story jumps ahead 20 years to find Roy back in Galveston after serving time in prison. Hurricane Ike is on the way.

If you are a fan of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series or Elmore Leonard at all, you will love this book. It is not a light story. Everybody doesn't live happily ever after. It will not make you feel good. It WILL make you understand why some people make very bad choices.

Some interesting musings on memory, time, and pain but overall a bit of a slog for me to get through. I was hoping for more intensity and a more tense atmosphere but overall still a good read.

Craving more True Detective, I bought this book and was not disappointed. The same themes about time and stories, the backdrop of New Orleans and the South, hard men with hard lives, hard women with even harder lives. Recommend to every one, missing the series or not.

For being the author's first novel, this book shows promise in the writer. Although it was not a very deep story, this read was a quick and pleasant one. Hoping for a more in depth novel, I would pick up his next release.

Wow, 4 1/2 stars from me. This book is well-written, and it kept me hooked right til the end. I must confess I kept seeing Matthew McConaughey as Roy. The language was very much in the style of 'True Detective' which I also thoroughly enjoyed. A great read!

Great beach read. Somewhat darker than I expected, but it's from the creator of True Detective so I should have known.
