Okay, so many thoughts. I am so excited to read the next one.

I saw it compared to Twilight meets Bridgerton and if that isn’t the truth.

I loved learning all this Vampire Lore and the rules and regulations. As well centuries worth of magic. It was enthralling and not something I thought I’d enjoy this much.

The cliffhanger was crazy. I bought all four books at the same time and didn’t realise it was the same couple across all. And that’s made me even more excited to continue the series.

Very well written, the ideas are executed perfectly and have so much depth to them.

Loved it. Grumpy Vampire ftw

That ending made me want to throw the book across the room. How are you going to tear Julian and Thea apart just when they were finally accepting the mate bond. They should have just tethered themselves to each other sooner so they could be together and in love. Now the rites are law and they can’t be together, and Julian just throws her out like she’s chopped liver. The next book better bring them back together because this was unfair.

Thank you to the author and publisher for sending me a copy of this in exchange for an honest review!

Ok, buckle down because I am about to wax lyrical about paranormal romance for a minute, and not all of it is going to be good.

The premise of this book was really great. I loved the idea of the age gap, the human x vampire, and the fake relationship. From the get-go, the main female character was the best one in the entire book, and I found myself constantly waiting to learn more about her and see her put centuries old vampires in their place. However, the main male character? Quite possibly the most irritating character I have ever come across. I don't know if it was on purpose, but he came across as spoilt and, quite frankly, like he was an 18 year old in his first relationship after spending just a little bit too much time reading relationship advice from men on reddit. Julian was meant to be this old, grumpy vampire, and I just found myself feeling so incredibly let down by the kind of character he was. Even the sex scenes between the two characters felt like they were just missing something. In fact, I would argue that the FMC had more chemistry with her male roommate than with Julian.

That being said, he did buy her an antique cello, so he earned some extra brownie points for that.

Despite the fact that this book combined my two least favourite tropes (Insta Love and Miscommunication), I felt that it was well written. I didn't end up cringing half the time, which happens a lot with paranormal romance, and I didn't find that I hated the style of writing. I think that with some work on Julians character, this book could actually be something really really special. Unfortunately, I can't say it is right now. This also ended on a cliffhanger, and I just put the book down. I didn't think about the characters or the story again. I am appathetic about reading the next one.

BUT this book had soooo much potential that I would really love to see met.

3 stars.

hmmm... i was pleasantly surprised by this book. it's commercial fiction, so of course, when going into it, i assumed that it was just going to be very heavily trope-y without much enjoyment. but this was rather fun to read and maintained a sense of realism in the bounds of the plot and the worldbuilding that it was portraying!

i liked the main character and the love interest is cool. i think our protagonist being a celloist is also interesting and i think it was something i've never read before. the smut is pretty good and because of the nature of their relationship, it never felt like one was taking advantage over the other which is a line that is often breached in books like these. so i'm grateful that it doesn't have those bad vibes and maintained a pretty fun and enjoyable pipeline of their relationship.

i think the one thing though that i didn't really like was the childishness that the love interest would sometimes have. i think it's important that characters have flaws, but his moments of juvenile tantrums felt so outlandish because he was otherwise characterized to be very mature and "old man"-esque.

the main conflicts of this book were generally just centered around miscommunication and an overbearing mother. i'm disappointed we never saw much more lore and innerworkings of the family or of julian specifically. the last few pages felt rushed to be able to cater to having a second book in the series, instead of letting things flow naturally. i wished the ending was a little more organic but it wasn't. it's a little bit annoying when characters can't just talk it out and try to solve it together, mostly in this case because both of the characters have the clear ability to do so and a strong enough bond to be able to make that choice, but simply don't because 'plot.'

otherwise, it was fun. i'll read the second book.

I LOVED READING THIS BOOK.

It was a mixture of Crazy Rich Asian (one of my favorite movies) and Crave (but for adults).
The MMC was giving mature Edward Cullen vibes and I just couldn’t get enough of him. He had me kicking and screaming into my pillow with how swoony he was.
The MFC was so relatable because if a FILTHY RICH HANDSOME VAMPIRE asked me to fake date him, I will in fact leave it all behind NO QUESTION ASKED. Random but I also love her name, Thea. Like that’s so cute.

I will recommend this book to anyone who loved Twilight growing up. Please read it.

This was a good read but the angst was killing me in the end, I brought the second book but I'm a little scared to read it yet 😅
