Cool illustrations, really great story. The cat bit made me cry =( Definitely pick this up if you're into graphic novels.

Not my favorite art, but there's no denying the plot of this one is interesting.

Interesting and unique premise, albeit a bit confusing at times. A girl gets her heart broken and wishes it away. Her wish comes true and, suffering the feelings of emptiness, she wants it back. A mysterious figure named "Bob" tells her that the seven pieces of her heart have all been given away and that if she wants them back she must find them. The only way to get them back is for the recipient to wish them back to her...or something. A bit confusing as to how this works, but the story is fast-paced and kept me interested.

This comic didn’t give me a great first impression. The writing style was very basic and childish, and seemed more suited to a twitter feed. However despite being short that his was actually a pretty deep story with some interesting moral conundrums. The art is very stylised but I very pretty in places, and used the comic medium to full effect. Will definitely be looking for more of these creators work in the future.

Summary:

Emma's heart has been utterly broken. It feels like she'll never be whole again – like her life would be better if she felt nothing. So one day, a mysterious stranger appears and offers to take all her problems away. All she has to do is wish her heart away, and it'll be gone.

Obviously, Emma quickly learns that life with no heart is not worth it. Thus begins her journey to track down all the pieces of her broken heart, one step at a time. Will she succeed and become whole, or will she give up?

Review:

I have been meaning to read Heart in a Box for FAR too long. And clearly, I should not have slept on this story because it is amazing! Heart in a Box is heartbreaking (forgive me, but it's true), compelling, and shockingly human.

The story is split into distinct parts, with each piece of her heart (seven in total) having it's own adventure and story. In many cases, the pieces come with a lesson for Emma to learn. Through Emma, the readers also learn.

There is something in Heart in a Box that everyone will find relatable. It could be the over-encompassing breakup. It could be the familiar loss. Or the disconnection. Or even her connection to a cute little stray cat. Whatever it is, it will draw you into this story.

This started off in a pretty dark place, so I was pleasantly surprised when it resolved in a really sweet and heartwarming place.

I struggled with the artwork occasionally, as it isn’t totally to my taste (and sometimes I wasn’t entirely sure what I was looking at), but I did really love the way the artist depicted the hearts and what happened when a piece was found, that was really beautiful.

Updated review: 14/02/2018 - The artwork was superb and the storytelling wonderful. I ended up identifying with Emma on so many levels and will definitely re-read it again in the future.

Original review: What a lovely surprise of a book!

I bought this graphic novel on a whim and I am very glad I did.

Heart in a Box is an affecting read which follows Emma Elliot as she tries to piece her heart back together after a painful break-up. We follow her as she journeys across America, visiting myriad people in an attempt at making her heart whole once again.

The concept was brilliant and perfectly executed. The dialogue was sharp and the illustrations were superb. (I particularly loved Emma's eyes). And Bob was great! He looked like a human devil *swoons*

Heart in a Box is a perfect example of concise and effective storytelling - it isn't a long read (160 pages) and yet it embodies the whole story. We follow one woman on a life-changing rediscovery of herself and Thompson makes this look effortless. I shall definitely be checking out her other work!

I now feel inspired to take up the pen myself and have my way on paper. Perhaps I shall.

If you want a great little graphic novel to read in this lovely sunshine, Heart in a Box is definitely the way to go!
