A superb biography of a historical figure that is hard to pinpoint and yet easy to judge. Unger does not try to excuse the more suspect and cruel points of machiavellis political philosophy, but instead gives a facetted, reflected and honest picture of a flawed man caught between the tides and of the ideas he wrote down. It takes an interest in political philosophy to read this biography, as it is heavily focused on machiavellis theories, but it is incredibly well written and definitely worth the read.
