It's fun to see Darth Vader getting told off by his Master for the Death Star disaster. It also adds more to the New Hope/Empire Strikes Back stories as the comic slots in nicely between them and also expands on the Vader/Palpatine relationship. I'm looking forward to reading more of the series.

Really solid Star Wars comic storytelling. Fun intro to Doctor Aphra (breakout comic star and well overdue for a live action moment). Vader looks cool and kicks ass. What more do you want?

Awesome insight into Vader and the Emperor's relationship. At first I was a bit overwhelmed with all the fast movement and various side stories but it all came together by the end.

This does not have the same punch of the other series, written by Charles Soule.

This series/arc is supposed to give background to Vader & Luke's story, but I am not sure I will read the rest. The story telling is much weaker to me.

Meh. I'm sad to have read two [a:Kieron Gillen|439887|Kieron Gillen|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1351308091p2/439887.jpg] books today that were both tremendously disappointing (the other being [b:The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 3: Commercial Suicide|25853351|The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 3 Commercial Suicide (The Wicked + The Divine, #3)|Kieron Gillen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1453740622s/25853351.jpg|45721400]).

The first half of Vader mostly just sets up the timeline, which places the titular character at the beginning of his downfall from favour within the ranks of the Empire.

The second half introduces an evil facsimile of Kaylee from Firefly as a clever, chatty "rogue archaeologist" who immediately begins to serve as Lord/Sir/Mister Vader's jokey sidekick. From that point on, I felt like Gillen is great at coming up with new and interesting characters, but getting the most famous movie villain of all time's voice down is proving difficult. No, that's putting it sympathetically. What we have here is a dismal failure.

And the Empire does *not* tolerate failure.
