These stories were frustrating because they were past events retold in the present. I understand the value of ratiocination, and most of the great fictional sleuths do it, but an entire story where the protagonist explains all the details instead of experiencing them, or seeing their effects contemporaneously, was a little dry. Fortunately, they are fairly short, and the solutions, such as they are, are clever. But I do take issue with the story The Mysterious Death in Percy Street. Are we to believe that the old man
tied the window sash up and thereby caused the death of Mrs Owen?
And if that's the case, and the Lady Journalist (and we)
never see the old man again
, why is that the third story out of twelve? Weird. Anyway, interesting, not earth-shattering, read it if you find it it but don't go out of your way.
