Very involved world-building that was sometimes difficult to follow, or maybe that was my bad hehe, but a super unique plot with likeable characters

I don’t know who is who because the characters’ names all sound similar to me, the plot was absolutely non existent, the romance was TERRIBLE and came out of fucking nowhere and I feel absolutely drained after reading this dumpster fire

I'm cracking up because I enjoyed this book SO MUCH but I truly did not understand one second of the politics or the "race" relations for lack of a better term. The moment one character says "daeva, if you want to use that term" and then another says "we call them djinn" my brain turned off and I could not absorb a single more thought. Perhaps my inability to understand the nuances made the book better for me...if I pause to think about what was happening, it seemed like straight up magical racism, which is my least favorite fantasy trope.
BUT I think the characters and main story outside of the politics was so wild and interesting that I don't care that Daevabad made no sense and that the King's actions were nonsensical. Truly, this sounds so sarcastic but I really did enjoy the book! I can't wait to read the next.
