This book was so freaking tedious. I stopped reading it and got the audiobook. Then I returned the audiobook. Then I got it again. BUT! The message was important and poignant. 95% a drag, 5% absolutely essential. Made me want to hug my daughters.

A creepy, fun book that riffs well on the familiar La Llarona folklore. Ultimately the time jumps left me feeling a bit disjointed from the characters, but as a whole I enjoyed my read and will definitely be picking up more Castro in the future.

I feel like I'm in a reading slump; everything has been 2 or 3 stars, and unfortunately this is no different. The premise of this is sooo good but it lacked in execution. It was slow and dull in some parts, which took the horror of La Llorona away. There's multiple POVs and flashbacks to Alejandra's ancestors and their own hauntings of La Llorona. It's a lot to keep track of sometimes as the flashbacks aren't chronological and don't always seem to have relevance to the present day story line. The dialogue felt weird and unnatural at times. By the end, I just wasn't all that invested, unfortunately.

This is based on a Mexican folklore a retalling of Mexican Mythology. Multiple POV's and multiple time-lines. The themes are motherhood, suicidal ideation, depression and female empowerment. It is a slow burn but also it was a bit scary. I am glad I read this story because I learned about this Mexican mythology even though it frightened me a little.

i really wanted to love this book because the concept is so strong but some of the fantasy elements just weren’t my jam.
