Cheesy and cutesie as one can expect from Deaver’s work. I think I could have loved this if Cupids had been fleshed out better. It was such an interesting concept but not as well developed as I was hoping.

This book is cute but I felt there were some plot holes that could’ve been helped with world building. The role of Cupids is laid out: they help humans fall in love. But where they come from and why they have the rules they have is left out. I like Jude’s they’re sweet, kind, and loving. Huy is also all of those things. I think they complement each other very well. I just didn’t like the way Leah spoke to Jude about their choices towards the end of the book. It felt like if you feel that way about humans why are you helping them? I enjoyed the authors writing so I’ll definitely read more of their work, this one just didn’t hit fully for me.

A lighthearted YA romance about a nonbinary Cupid named Jude who falls in love with a human boy. This was a highly anticipated read of mine considering that I'm a big fan of Mason Deaver's work. However, this proved to be my least favorite book of theirs, despite the intriguing fantasical premise of a forbidden romance between a Cupid and a human. I wish there was a lot more worldbuilding with the Cupid side of the story (where do Cupids come from? how are Cupids trained? are Cupids immortal? why is the fact that Cupids can fall in love with other Cupids introduced over 2/3 through the book??). Because there was very little worldbuilding, I felt disconnected to Jude, AKA the main character. This, combined with the disappointing open ending (which, normally, I enjoy, but this one I actually disliked!!!), made for a mediocre read.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve mostly stopped reading YA books because I found they didn’t appeal to me as much as they used to. Nothing against the books or the genre, I’d just personally moved on. But when I saw Okay, Cupid on NetGalley, I was immediately intrigued! I went back and forth on requesting because I didn’t want my general bias against (disinterest in? Apathy towards? Whatever.) YA books to color a review. I have read and enjoyed Mason Deaver’s books before so I decided to go for it.

And I’m so glad I did! The premise is so unique and interesting. Jude is a teenage cupid who is sent to a human high school to try to help a pair that is “meant to be” get together. Obviously, shenanigans ensue, and as much as this book is a lot of fun, it’s also a really sweet, thoughtful look at what it means to be human and also what it means to be yourself to the fullest. As with all of Deaver’s books, there’s a lot of queer representation. Jude, the main character, is non-binary and one of the pair they’re trying to get together is a trans man. Both of the people Jude is trying to pair up are Vietnamese, but I’ll leave it to someone else to evaluate the representation there.

I wouldn’t say Deaver’s writing style is anything particularly exciting but I don’t have anything to say against it either. The characters and the premise are definitely the stars of the show here, and it’s more than enough to keep me interested. I’d recommend this book to just about anyone, but especially anyone looking for t4t romance.

My one semi-complaint is the ending. It felt a little unsatisfying, but at the same time, given the set up, I have no idea how else it could’ve ended.

i adored the vast majority of this book except for the ending im ready to throw hands at that ending

what i hoped for was for jude to stand up for themself and become human so they could stay with huy, and it really seemed like that was where the story was headed. i was wildly disappointed when both them and huy forgot each other and jude stayed a cupid anyway. also WHY DID THEY BOTH FORGET EACH OTHER? it just doesn’t make sense, if jude didn’t forget leo then why did they forget huy? i def wish the cupid side of things had been more fleshed out, cause in this it just felt paper-thin and just there to make a unique romcom.

ending and iffyness on how Cupid-ness works

, i adored this wholeheartedly and want to read more from mason deaver in the future !!
