it was an ok book however the prolog is from just past the middle of the story. So if you want to read this book I would recommend that you skip the prolog and just start at chapter one, I'm sure that had I done that I would have enjoyed this book much more than I did!

Historical fiction at its best

This was so entertaining and sexy! I loved the dynAmic between Danielle and Adrien throughout the many years. I will definitely be picking up more from Heather Graham.

I found this in a lending library replete with romance novels in the tiny town of Pacific Beach, WA (as all lending libraries in tiny beach towns should be). It is very representative of the genre (which I like!), but not exceptional, and grating in one significant way. The author is totally up on her medieval history, so I did actually enjoy and learn from the political intrigue aspects of the plot, but the central romance is just way too consistently about rape fantasy for me. I don't want that to sound judgmental, because there is a wide swath of things that people find sexy and enjoy in consensual ways, but if a relationship is all "hate sex," that's just not my particular cup of tea. No matter how satisfying the characters are written as finding it afterwards. But my feelings aren't hurt, and it was exactly the sort of thing you zip through at the beach and then never think of again (or at least, once you write your goodreads review).

I fell in love with this book back in '98. It's one of those stories that I can't even explain why I love it so much, only that I do. The original mass market paperback is out of print, but the story has been re-issued on Kindle (same title, but under Heather Graham instead of Shannon Drake - [b:The King's Pleasure|15808022|The King's Pleasure|Heather Graham|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344609451s/15808022.jpg|21532622])

DNF. It had such potential. I am totally into enemies to lovers but this was toxic with a capital T.

The constant anger that Adrian has towards Danielle made me so uncomfortable. I mean, he's supposed to be 10 years older than her but it doesn't mean he was mature. As a child she played mean tricks on him (pepper in his wine, honey in his boot) but a man should be able to handle it. From then on his default was to immediately have violent thoughts when he saw her. The anger felt irrational in my opinion.

Then, for crying out loud, he walks into her room while she is bathing before the wedding and just won't leave. It felt out of place for a time period when such emphasis is put on "proper behavior" if that makes sense.

Then, raping her on the wedding night and I noped out really fast.
