This was a 2.5 star read for me. Short collections are tricky. This collection is based on stories set in . There were stories of seemingly unredeemable characters, living on the dole and stealing, and no vision for the future. A couple of experimental narratives - not appealing. I love "traditional" short stories that capture a world, or a moment, and distil these into a few pages of prose. My favorite short story writers are [a:William Trevor|16002|William Trevor|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1269201140p2/16002.jpg] and [a:William Trevor|16002|William Trevor|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1269201140p2/16002.jpg][a:Alice Munro|6410|Alice Munro|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1494056984p2/6410.jpg]. I have enjoyed short stories by [a:Lucy Caldwell|926722|Lucy Caldwell|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png], [a:Edwidge Danticat|3525|Edwidge Danticat|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1226496700p2/3525.jpg], [a:Wendy Erskine|18406138|Wendy Erskine|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1554067544p2/18406138.jpg] and [a:James Salter|11298|James Salter|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1360177449p2/11298.jpg]. Many readers feel they don't like short stories. I would encourage them to read a collection by a single author.
This collection is published by a small independent publisher in Ireland which is my reason for bumping this up to 3 stars.

Beautiful collection. I can't wait to get back out to Galway and see it's new normal.
