I really enjoyed "The Knowing" by Karen Campbell and it was quite an unusual read to the norm for me, incorporating a gay romance, a psychic medium and with a supernatural theme running through the story this was a highly entertaining and engaging read.
'Let the dead whisper in your dreams.......' - Jen Keith has dreams and visions about deaths which are yet to happen. Jen's goal is to assist the police in cases they are struggling to solve, however she is constantly finding herself embroiled in trouble, putting herself in danger to help innocents. But who will believe her? Will her police officer girlfriend Kate, or does she have another agenda?
It's very difficult to put this book down once you start - you soon find yourself on a rollercoaster of intrigue. The story is predominantly based on Jen's deep emotional relationship with Kate that has connections and repercussions to various themes running throughout the book. Suffering from recurring and frightening nightmares which constantly torment her, together with her trusted notepad and her psychic sixth sense she's able to stop heinous crimes and save lives. There's some great characters in the story too and with some unexpected twists along the way this makes an excellent read. The ending was very tense and although you knew that something still had to happen, that doesn't lesson the emotion any the less and I was quite saddened at the conclusion. Set in Glasgow this gritty, crime novel will appeal to many readers and I'd have no hesitation in recommending it. There's a hint of another book to follow and I'd happily read a further one in the series by this author. "The Knowing" of the unknown - is it best to know or not to know??
