I mostly really loved this. It's set in a militaristic, fantastical, not!California full of heroic women. The world building is fun and bonkers, while still having a sold internal logic and the story has a real emotional heart to it. I was completely sold on Flora's often difficult relationships with her parents, and the ending made me cry happily (thankfully I wasn't on the bus at the time.)

I have one reservation. I may be over thinking this but, current US politics around Latin America and Mexico specifically being what they are, the alt!Aztecs being presented as the bad guys felt a bit questionable. I really want to read more of the series, and I hope that we get more from the Huitzil perspective to remedy this a bit.
