I stumbled upon this book in YA fantasy section. The ultra-wide landscape panels are stunning, reminiscent of Chinese painting scrolls. However, I have question about multiple artistic choices. The most serious one being a mistranslation “her hair flows like a river’ and why is the goddess topless? Is the illustrator aiming to invoke some Venus-esque imagery?

A stirring tale about a man who falls in love with a goddess at first sight.

The shining star of this publication, though, is the illustrations.

They are absolutely divine. The fold-out pages allow you to immerse yourself in the history and culture and beauty that existed in feudal China.

This is a whole experience.

The illustrations are g.o.r.g.e.o.u.s. but I found the story a little thin. Essentially it's one man raving about the beauty of a mermaiden goddess. He carries on about her beauty and loveliness for pages and pages and pages, other gods arrive, and ultimately the Goddess of the Luo River must leave because relationships between humans and gods never work out. She seems a little sad, but he leaves his life behind to camp by the river forevermore and dwell upon the memory of her glory.

But the flow of the pictures is just... wow. And there are multiple sections that fold out into ultra-wide landscapes.
