While well-written and interesting, I wish Bulgakov would have expanded on the ideas that he seems merely to touch upon in this novella. For example, he describes one of the main characters as abhorrent, instead of thoroughly developing the character's questionable behavior through episodes. All in all, it's a quality read that leaves you wanting just a little bit more from the author.

Nëse nuk doni të hallakateni dhe të nisni lexime që nuk dini si do t'ju shkojnë, zgjidhni Bugakovin dhe do ndiheni të plotësuar. Për mua është libri i tretë që lexoj prej tij (Pas 'Mjeshtrit e Margaritës dhe Gardës së Bardhë). Çuditërisht, të tre romanet janë jashtëzakonisht të ndryshëm nga njëri-tjetri (fantazi, historical fiction dhe sci-fi), por në asnjërin prej tyre Bulgakov nuk gabon apo bie në stil, personazhe, fabul dhe mesazh. (Mos harroni të lexoni mbi peripecitë e dorëshkrimit të 'Zemër qeni' 😉)
Në 'Zemër qeni' Bugakov satirizon idenë e shtruar në vitet e para të komunzimit në Bashkimin Sovjetik për rindërtimin e njeriut, lindjen e krijesës së re dhe superiore sovjetike. Përmes përdorimit të shkencës jashtë limiteve etike dhe duke ndërhyrë mbi një pushtet më të lartë se shkencëtarët, -evolucionin Darvinian- Filip Filipoviçi dhe ndihmësi i tij Bormentali krijojnë një qenie më të rrezikshme se qesharake prej trupit të një qeni endacak. Pasi kuptojnë se kanë shkelur në një realitet të paparashikuar, ata përpiqen të zhbëjnë eksperimentin e tyre, duke fshikulluar idetë e Trotskit dhe Leninit mbi përmirësimin e gjeneve sovjetike dhe eksperimenteve në Paris për rinimin e njeriut përmes gjeneve të majmunëve.
Gjenialiteti i romanit ndërtohet prej përshkrimit tejet të detajuar të jetës së proletariatin në Moskë, fundit të borgjezisë së mbetur ende më këmbë, njohurive prej mjeku të vetë Bulgakovit dhe ironisë sa të hollë aq edhe vrasëse që e karakterizon kaherë. Një lexim që tërheq shpejt dhe në mënyrë të pashmangshme drejt një realiteti në dukje tejet të largët, por në fakt ende të pranishëm në njerëzit kërkojnë eliksirin e Përjetësisë.

What struck me most about this was the intense sense of place and time I felt when reading it, the polarity of the society and the social situation and the way of life--not because it was meticulously researched but because the author was living it. And overall, beyond that, it was a tremendous story and social critique.

It was fascinating to read this story especially since the characters contradict themselves. Philip Philippovich takes in a stray dog, Sharik, treats the dog with kindness, and even scolds people when they try to beat the dog for bad behavior. When Sharik is experimented on and forced to live in a human body, Philippovich abuses Sharik because he is not civilized. It makes the reader question the meaning of having a heart of a dog. The doctor is fully human, but behind his clean exterior, he is cruel and vile.

Early 20th-century Russian satire. Like Bulgakov’s [book: The Master and Margarita], I don’t feel like I fully get this book, and yet I still really enjoyed it. I guess in some ways, that’s a ringing endorsement! Seriously, though, I would recommend this. Especially to people I suspect are smarter than I am. *coughSiriacough*

This was hilarious, laughed out loud several times. It also provided for some interesting social critiques. I fail to appreciate some of the rich context of Soviet Russia, but nevertheless, it was very enjoyable.
