Generally recommended if you like sci-fi action, government conspiracy, and a very tiny slice of romance. It's a short read where a lot happens.

Katherine Bogle pulled me into the world of The Aldar Dominion right off the bat, effectively creating a futuristic society full of aliens, clones, and futuristic technology. Selene is a kickass heroine who constantly amused me with her Buffy-like banter, and the plot was so suspenseful and unpredictable that I didn't want to put the book down. This is an entertaining, action-packed read, and I look forward to reading the next in the series!

I struggled through the first half of “The Aldar Dominion,” although truthfully, the almost continuous action made the journey more enjoyable. About a third of the way through the story shifted and became something else, and about halfway through the plot seemed like it would become more inventive, more interesting.

I was happy to see the changes, as from time to time there were jarring instances that yanked me out of the story. Numerous instances of people from the 24th century talking like they belonged in the 21st betrayed the world the author Katherine Bogle had attempted to create. Most guns today are reloaded using magazines, so it was difficult to believe clips were being employed in the future (let alone someone using a 20th century “bullet” gun). Space travel was a normal everyday item, yet other scientific aspects of life lagged woefully behind.

Despite these depictions of life in the 24th century, I continued to read because I thought the plot was improving. However, the story slipped back into predictability, fading to nothing more than a futuristic pulp fiction. There were only two things that made the novel less enjoyable. One was the predictability of the climax. The second was that the book ended in a cliffhanger.

Bottom line: If you are an adrenaline junkie and non-stop action is what you crave, you will love this book and will probably follow the author into her next offering.

If you are looking for deep characterization, solid world-building, and creative prose, you will probably be disappointed. Add in the cliffhanger ending, and it is not possible to award this book more than three stars.

This is the first real indie book I've read this year, and as far as indies go, it's pretty solid. There arent major plotholes or inconsistencies, and the characterization isn't wildly unrealistic like in some idie books. Thematically there's not a lot to delve into here, but that seems to work with the kind of book this is:

More than anything else, Bogle's book appears to fall solidly into the action category. The prose is straightforward and precise, and it reads as if the author first envisioned this story as a big-budget film rather than a novel. As someone who isn't a fan of action books, I found my mind wandering a lot while I read, but that could easily be because Action isn't really my genre. The characterization and world-building weren't very rich, but it works with the style, and even though the author takes a less-is-more approach to explaining how her futuristic society functions, the blend of modern sensibilities with a variety of sci-fi concepts was unique and landed well.

Like many indies, there were a few instances where word-phrasing was awkward or I spotted a typo, but nowhere near the same level as so many other indie books. Readers looking for a sprawling story with complicated world-building and complex themes might want to give this book a pass, but if you're interested in an energetic, fast-paced read that keeps you hooked without demanding too much of you, and you're a fan of sci-fi action movies, there's no reason not to give this book a shot.
