I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,
And Mourners to and fro
Kept treading - treading - till it seemed
That Sense was breaking through -

And when they all were seated,
A Service, like a Drum -
Kept beating - beating - till I thought
My mind was going numb -

And then I heard them lift a Box
And creak across my Soul
With those same Boots of Lead, again,
Then Space - began to toll,

As all the Heavens were a Bell,
And Being, but an Ear,
And I, and Silence, some strange Race,
Wrecked, solitary, here -

And then a Plank in Reason, broke,
And I dropped down, and down -
And hit a World, at every plunge,
And Finished knowing - then -

Emily Dickinson’s unquestionably prophetic insight into the nature of reality and at times, the nature of God, lingers in all her work. She had a clear understanding of the beauty of grace, mercy, and inspiration while also accounting for human suffering and subconscious inertia. At moments, she could convey in just one sentence the warmth of companionship and love, and at other times, the frost of death and loneliness.

Emily’s poems were heavy edited and “straightened” by those who published them. I’d love to see her real poems or a queer rendition of them.

I connected with these way more than I expected due to the era differences!

It’s been really fun to read through a poem or four before bed or in my downtime and ponder it a bit. Dickinson is a beautiful poet and the amount of highlighting and screenshooting I did whilst reading to send to others is a good amount. Obviously the language and prose can be a little difficult to understand-Emily had a wit in her writing and most of all she had universal feelings that are still applicable today.

In conclusion,

John Mulaney was right and he should’ve said it louder.

It was a little to dense for me to read and take in since I read poetry before bed. It’s more of a daytime reading so you can really understand what is being said.
