I agree with Lisa that this was not as funny as the others. It was heavy on the drama and short on the witty dialogue. Hopefully the cleverness will return in the next (final?) volume.

Just ok, but the best of the series by far. There is a little honesty here. Both Scott and Ramona admit they are bad people and break up. I found that satisfying. There is no reason they should be together other than that they love each other but there is no reason they should love each other that O'Malley has explained. I'm guessing they will get back together in the final volume and it will be sappy and I don't think that will be as satisfying.

While Scott seems to have done some serious soul searching and personal growth in the previous books, he appears to have stagnated a bit in volume 5. Perhaps it's at the expense of the plot, or maybe just to give Ramona a little bit more personality, but the penultimate volume does little to really make me like any of these characters. The league of evil ex-boyfriends is almost drawn to a close with the introduction of twins to basically get rid of two characters at once, and even they didn't last all that long in the overall plot.

Hoping that the final volume with bring back some much needed growth for all of the characters, as well as the closure that I'm sure Scott Pilgrim is looking for at this point.

Fast one. Fastest books ever.

You know what, I wasn't crazy about this one! Well, for one thing it is just kinda funny, and not ridiculously funny. And of course it is sad seeing Scott's failures get a light shined on them, though that is part of the point. He's gotten away with lots and lots. I still like him so much though. Sometimes you just need a break. I guess I want to give him lots of breaks.

It's hard to critique these books because they're so short, with so few steps in each one. So it's kinda weird to say I expected more from the characters, but I did. What is Stephen even doing there? And why's he gotten all, like, mangey for three books? Also how come Scott's sister is on the map, so to speak, and she's said about two sentences the whole series? And soon it'll be finished, and I wanted to learn more things. Tell me about subspace damn it! It's a fun atmosphere, but it could be made richer.

It seems like we might finally get some focus on Ramona (ironically) in the last book. I'd like to hear a lot more from her. I still sort of have a problem with the evil exes thing. It's just supposed to be cute, a device, which is fine. But symbolically it is not awesome, in a "These men are guardians of my personal life" way. So I wish that ever got a mention.

Mostly the only thing I really really liked here was Kim, who is just really great through the whole book -- even though her suddenly being a solid friend doesn't really make sense with how annoyed and unattached she always has been. (And if we're supposed to figure that she's being a pal because she's hung up on Scott from high school... bleh. But I'm not sure that's it.)

Maybe when the last one comes out I'll read it super slowly. Just for fun.

Everything I said for volume one stands for this one. My spoiler-y notes:
Spoiler
I liked how Scott loses everything. The hero, even in a comedy series, has to hit rock bottom if he's to have a happy ending.

I liked the Twins and their constant robot attacks. I also liked how they ended up being able to fight and how Scott beat them both at once.

Though, I'm not sure I liked how he had to rescue Kim to do it. That didn't work for me.

This one shows how much of Scott’s actions have consequences given how his friends and even Ramona are starting to get tired of his irresponsible behavior and start to withdraw from him. This really shows the various emotional problems that comes from being in your 20’s and growing to be an adult. So it’s quite the commentary on how actions have consequences and how you treat people and their feelings matter. You can see how O’Malley’s writing has changed and shifted away from the more fantastic aspects to the emotional ones.
