This sequel has its weaknesses but it was still a compelling read. Things get a bit darker and harsher than the first book (and that's saying something). It really kept me on my toes. I was glued to the page and terrified for every character.

There's a twist at the midpoint that I won't spoil, but it really changes the game. I understand why the narrative device in the second half was necessary but it brought down my enjoyment of the book. Characters that had barely been introduced became critical to the story. Other characters experienced a lot of drama off page without that development being backed up.

I think the ending paid off, but it was not quite the story I expected. There's hope but also darkness. It was rather uneven overall but still an interesting story.

I liked this one even better than the first! We have an LGTBQIA black female amputee kick-ass cast set in an alternative post Civil War/Gold Rush western with zombies!!!

What an unexpectedly emotional and totally expected action filled book! This was a great follow up to Dread Nation and finale to the duology. The theme of this book is survival and revenge and those emotions are so well described that they almost jump off the page.

I have to say this book seemed pretty different from the first book, in a good way. The first book did a wonderful job of introducing the character, focusing on the perils of this alternate shambler, post-war filled world. The character development was much deeper in this book and I really felt like I got to know and understand Katherine and Jane. Also the friendships! Really well written, interesting, and deep friendship. Also we get to see more of the dynamics of this country and how it treats different people based on gender, class, and race.

I highly recommend the audiobook version of this book!

This book was definitely an instance where the sequel far surpassed the first book.

I loved how the characters adapted to the adversity they were facing and how no character or situation was as simple as black-and-white (including the bigotry and racism they encountered).

The dual perspectives added a fresh and nuanced take that was missing from the first book and the plot wasn't bogged down by odd political machinations like the first book.

I was hesitant to read this second book because I didn't love the first one, but I'm so glad that I did because I think that Ireland did an excellent job wrapping up the story while still leaving the ideal amount of questions open to envision the future of the characters.

This picks up almost immediately after the first book. This has a little bit of a slow start, but the first one did as well. Once you hit the rhythm, things go fast

I enjoyed following the little ragtag group of people who helped Jane and Katherine on their journey. Some parts shocked me (I definitely gasped out loud a couple of times)

Definitely a good follow up to Dread Nation
