I have no idea what was going on by the end of this book and rating it is tricky - it started as a 4 star but by the end more like 2.
I'm not religious myself so I think a lot of that was perhaps lost on me and I didn't understand Miriam's story at all. The dysfunctional family dynamics were interesting though.

Currently I'm feeling a 3.5 on this one, but I'm likely to change. It took me a bit to get used to the use of the present tense throughout, but it lent the story an immediacy which led to the sense of the story as an out of control freight train.
In broad strokes, the author looks at spelling bees, but there is far more about Jewish mysticism, spiritual journeys, intellectualism and sanity.

I read this book because Gabe told me I should and because the main character's name is Eliza. It was pretty much unlike anything I've ever read. I went into it expecting it to deal mostly with spelling bees, but that definitely isn't really the main focus of the book. It's really about Eliza and her family and how each of them is searching for some kind of higher meaning in their own way, which ends up tearing the family apart. I stayed up too late several nights in a row until I finished reading it and was captivated the entire time.

I thought I'd seen the movie for this but eventually realized that I hadn't. I found it an odd book. I couldn't quite figure out what the main message was... And I didn't like the ending at all! Give it a try if it sounds interesting to you. It's easy to read at the least.

My 2-star review is based on my personal dislike of the mother and father characters in this book, not on the quality of the book overall. That said Bee Season is really well written. It was easy to read on the bus. The short segments were appealling for stop and start reading, and the pace of the book made for a relatively quick read.

I admit that I was drawn to this book because of a Decemberists song. Turns out I really liked it, though.

The word choice and structure reminded me of reading one long exhilarating poem. A beautiful, tragic story.

I found this to be a surprisingly engrossing book: the characters were all empty people with empty lives. They all attempt to seek fulfillment with varying degrees of success. It wasn't necessarily realistic, and the reader probably won't be satisfied with the ending (although I was) but it was a good read.
