calling your parents “mommy” and “daddy” seems unnecessary for any adult

Recommended to me by my mother-in-law. It was a peaceful sort of book but surprisingly tragic material. I had thought it would be more like the cozy stories my good friend describes as "the literary equivalent of a cup of hot chocolate" (Jenny Colgan's bookshop series), but this was more like a cup of strong tea with milk (no sugar) -- good for sitting and thinking, keeps you company, offers comfort. There is a bitter undertone but it is balanced and part of the whole.

Very different in structure and complexity from Olive Kitteridge, which is one of my favorite novels. But I relished the intimacy of this story, and the poetry of many passages and insights. Strout knows people, she knows their loneliness and suffering, and she knows how love and connection (however tenuous) can ease that suffering. Heartbreaking and beautiful novel.
