This book was really cute. I loved how the author worked in family, friend, and romantic love into this investigation of spirituality, community, and history. I feel smarter about Caribbean culture after reading this book, and the learning was an enjoyable experience. I also don’t get to read too many books with Haitian main characters, which was a big selling point for me. Will most likely read more of this author’s work in the future and recommend this book to friends.

I loved this one day novel about Haitian American Cecily and her friends on the day of the West Indian Day parade in New York. Cecile’s aunt becomes possessed by a spirit while doing a spiritual reading. The story takes place during the parade, while Cecily and he best friend and her crush gather items to depossess her aunt. It’s vividly written, and I learned about island cultures and Vodou.

This was cute! Full of culture with the right amount of life lessons in between. I like how the talk of Vodou and spirits were not scary or intimidating. It was a fun way of discussing the stereotypes we know around spirituality. I also like it did not push the narrative of being or not believing, it just wants you to be open and respectful.
