This book was... good. Definitely a quick little fantasy. Unfortunately, it felt stale during the last couple chapters. Once Tallora and Dauriel decided they *were* in love with each other I pretty much checked out. Everything else after that point I could guess and the climax of the story felt just okay.

The book also has quite a few heavy topics that it doesn't always seem to handle at the best of times, like they were sprinkled in to add some sort of meat to the setting. Maybe the world is built on even more in the sequels but I don't feel any particular need to continue this series.

Not the best book, but definitely a fun read. Quick and fun!

DNF around 60%

I see what the author was going for here and I think it started off really interesting. However, my personal interest began to fall off when our mermaid, who is only a mermaid for maybe the first 15% of the book, stopped trying to escape. I also didn't like how Tallora and Dauriel would talk to each other, how they would taunt or mock one another. It was verbally abusive at times. Don't get me started on when one of them would refer to the other as a "bitch" but meant it in an "affectionate" way once they started having feelings. Just...no. On top of that, Tallora would cry every single time she was upset or something bad happened. And I mean every. single. time. This girl could have made a river to carry her back to the ocean after all the tears she cried.

The idea was really interesting, started off strong, but again, my personal interest in it simply floated away with each passing chapter.

This story is hard to describe, in that it has a lot of emotional depth. Tallora is kidnapped from the ocean after saving a princess named Dauriel. Tallora is made a slave to the mighty Solviran empire, and she ends up needing to work with Dauriel to survive.

Within the story, a tale of forgiveness and redemption is told, and readers get to learn more about both Tallora and Dauriel. Dauriel is especially a morally grey character that I ended up loving! The worldbuilding is fantastic, and readers won't want to miss out on reading the other two books! For readers of the Fallen Gods series, a certain iconic half-demon general appears.

rep: wlw main characters (a bi mermaid and a butch princess), wlw side characters (sapphic goddesses)
CW: abusive parents, sexual harassment, sexual assault, kidnapping, and violence
