Like advice from a sweet and well-meaning uncle. A joy to read and a book I will go back to in reference in the future.

A calming and comforting read, perfect for that post-breakup stage of not exactly despairing any more but just feeling a constant melancholy. The tone isn't annoyingly upbeat, instead it just seems to promote accepting where you're at and sticking it out. With lines such as 'When you say ugly you mean your beauty is not now in style,' how could one not feel better?!

As for the actual content? It's not a novel, not a cookbook, and not a self help book. It can be read in one go or bit by bit, in order or not. If I had to try and pin down a description, I'd call it a series of vignettes, that capture certain emotions and situations very successfully. Some sections are rather weird, others very down to earth. But that does't really do it justice. I just heartily recommend that when the time is right (and you'll know it's right as you read) that you give it a go and let Hector sooth you.

Anyone who is a little sad and hasn't found an understanding friend or a trusted shoulder to cry on or hideously laugh at life with, should immediately buy this book and read it and preserve it so you can read it over time. And if you do have a friend then buy two books and both of you read it! Everything you have ever felt is addressed in this book and a solution is provided and as it happens in many cases the plight of there being no solution is also made clear. I'l be reading more from both Pushkin Press and Hectar Abad.
