3.5 stars. A very cute story. Rather British with the Sargeant and his silly accent (dropping "h"'s on some words and adding "h"'s on others).

The relationship between Danny and his father is a joy, as is Dahl's advice to children at the end to not become a stodgy parent... HAVE A SPARK.

Danny's idea is a clever one in this book and I really like how adults celebrated him as The Champion of the World. Of poaching.

Possibly my least favourite Dahl book. The terrible message given to Danny that poaching is an acceptable lifestyle choice gives poor life lessons for the children that read them.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It was a fun and entertaining read. I loved that this book had such a strong emphasis on a father-son relationship!

So I didn’t realise this book was mainly about poaching pheasants. It was told in Dahls fun and silly style but I felt uncomfortable with how it glorified hunting. I did like the inclusion of the BFG and the story about the bull frogs which I read in his memoir.

Go back and read all your favorite books from childhood, especially if they’re Roald Dahl. This is genuinely one of my favorite stories: a whimsical, sweet, and mischievous father and son adventure.

“What I have been trying so hard to tell you all along is simply that my father, without the slightest doubt, was the most marvelous and exciting father any boy ever had.”

Next time someone asks about my relationship with my father, I will simply tell them this story, as if my own... 'David the Champion if the World'!
