Writing ranges from pretty terrible to alright, especially bad when any female character is involved, which is unlucky considering 99% of the characters in this are women. Heard it gets good after a few books.

If I didn't know it gets better later in the series, the way the main character describes women physically and as if that was the most important description in addition to weak writing of the female characters, I would have given up. Powering through just for the world building until it gets less misogynistic.
Minor: Domestic abuse

A well structured first installment, altogether solid with some slight pain points.
The protagonist's perception of women is a bit overstated/repetitive - every interaction he has with a woman funnels down either one of two routes, chivalry or sexualisation.
The first person narrative lends itself to some pretty long winded sequences and obscure references, and on account of the genre nothing concrete seems to be happening until a revelation/conclusion is reached.
The magic system, despite repeated explaination, still comes off as an amorphous mishmash of ideas, though the introduction of new concepts is streamlined and makes for easier reading.
