Mexican Gothic started with promise—my favourite spooky and gothic setting, rich with cultural detail, and a strong-willed female main character. However, as the story unfolded, the reveal of the danger lurking in the house left me feeling underwhelmed and, frankly, a bit icked out. The ending didn't quite live up to the atmospheric buildup, and I found myself wishing for a more satisfying conclusion. Despite its flaws, the novel still offers a unique take on the gothic genre and sheds light on important themes of colonialism, classism, and familial secrets. Overall, a decent read but fell short of my expectations.

My one notable gripe with this book is that I firmly believe there should have been a content warning for SA at the beginning of the book.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main character is confident and lovely and bright. The tone of the book is so spot on, and the writing is dramatic and fun to read (even when you dread what is happening/about to happen). Because if this, I found the story to be captivating and imaginative. The idea and the story are interesting as well.

Again, there really should have been a content warning at the beginning. I do not personally feel as though the scenes are overly graphic or meaningless. Our main character is the one driving the plot, and those scenes do not feel like cheap or lazy means to drive the plot forward or force development. I just would have felt more cared for as a reader if that had been stated up front. I really don’t think content warnings are spoilers, and maybe we should implement them more, especially in the horror genre. The reason this didn’t effect my rating is 1) I felt the scenes fit into the narrative and 2) it is a horror, so some difficult (triggering) topics really should be expected.

Discovered Mexican Gothic from the Battle of the Books episode of the podcast codeswitch. Very much Get Out meets the Shining, so some thriller vibes. Super interesting and original (though disturbing) story. I can't wait to see more of Moreno-Garcia's work-- I think I read they're making a Hulu show of this book. Fast paced and you'll want to know how it comes together!
