Ta-Nehisi Coates is a poet. And poets speak truth, they speak revelations in words. What he has to reveal about the condition of being Black (or rather seen as Black) in America is not pretty. It is painful, but there is also beauty in it as well. There is a beautiful humanist realism in his recounting his America to his son. There is something pure and simple in his understanding of struggle. Struggle is inherent to progress and something that Black people cannot avoid. If you can avoid it, then you should read this book.

I am completely astounded with Coates's ability to embody a struggle eloquently. His truth-telling is the kind that is difficult to hear but necessary to know. I read this book at the perfect time in my life and I'm grateful to have been able to tune in to such an important message.
