Some aspects of this book are so cringey but nobody can write a romance like Mariana Zapata. NOBODY. I’ll keep standing by my love for this book (even with the cringey nicknames) because it is and has been for a while one of my fav books from her.

I'm not usually a fan of slow burn romance, but there's just something about Mariana Zapata's brand of it that I just love. Kulti is another one of my favorites from her. I love the whole dynamic between Sal and Kulti - how he used to be her childhood crush and is now her team's coach. I love Sal for being for sassy and Kulti for being a typical alpha character.
But what I love the most about this book is how Mariana Zapata handles slow burn romance - even if there's not a lot said, there are all these little actions that the characters do that make it obvious to the reader how they feel. And then at the end, the slow burn pays off because then the words come and it's just so satisfying.

After the [b:The Wall of Winnipeg and Me|29367958|The Wall of Winnipeg and Me|Mariana Zapata|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1456774327l/29367958._SY75_.jpg|48358625], I think I was better prepared for what a Mariana Zapata book entails. Namely, a lot of waiting.
This is both slower and faster than the Wall of Winnipeg- the MCs strike up a friendship quicker and their bond is way more pronounced, but man do they get forever to move beyond friendship.
Sal is a great heroine. She's determined, fun, smart, a team-player, but also competitive and ambitious. I love her relationship with her dad especially. And Rey is...Rey is literally a German chocolate cake! I gotta say, I think this book worked more for me because of Rey (Kulti). He is a bit of a grouch, yes, but he's also more pro-active, more clear about his feelings, more aggressive in seeking to spend time with Sal (in comparison to Aiden from the Wall of Winnipeg and Me).
I was grinning so much throughout almost the second half of the book, because their interactions were just so fun. I love how supportive he was and didn't mind the age difference one bit.
