The central romance, continued from the first, works pretty well for me, I think that the tensions placed on it make sense and the resolutions to them work. I liked the ritual cakes, in particular.
I was disappointed that things like the narrator's training in tinaje (accupuncture) didnt become a thread in this book. Maybe it will in the next. I really don't know what to make of the subplot with the narrator's childhood friend. It seems like it's weirdly placed if it's only to bring her the realization that she's always been more of the person she believed ivory has been turning her into than she thought.

In the second volume of the Ivory trilogy, our protagonist and her boyfriend are contemplating marriage and heading out on a routine fact-finding mission, except then they're immediately kidnapped by a band of outlaws. I love the narrative voice--she's a scholar of folk tales and has a sense of humor as she ruminates on their current problems. Again, great characters here, just really interesting and fun. A-.

I love this series. I can't believe it's so unknown. Not much else to say about it that I didn't already say in my review of the first book: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1452023111?book_show_action=false

Truly a fun read. this fantasy novel has it all--world building, outlaws, romance (and of an almost unheard of variety of romance in fiction--happily married romance.) Suspense, humor...you name it. It's not exceptionally deep but who cares?

I just enjoy Theodora's narration of her story. The characters are great and the plot is fun.

The second book in the trilogy, this one has Ran and Theodora hanging out with rebels. Fun times.
