Going into this book, I was afraid it was going to be one of those very technical science fiction stories that goes deep into how the technology works and uses and endless amount of jargon that I hardly know how to keep up with. Thankfully, it takes a more  philosophical tone as to what makes us us and going beyond our physical self to see what is at our core.

Jessica may not be the protagonist for everyone. She starts the story as your typical teen with an attitude but gradually you get the context and you can start to see more of her perspective.

I'm thankful that the story didn't slide into the easy trap of having a romance solely because there's a boy that's the only person her age on the ship. Their relationship is more grounded as a platonic one and really just grounds the story as a whole.

There are a couple of plot threads that seem to dangle and go nowhere.
?What exactly was causing the corruption of the data? Was it the "alien ghost?" Why did only affect her father and not her mother? How exactly was that data corrupted?
. The story just sort of ends without giving much closure to anything. It could have used maybe a chapter or two to give some clarification or tying of loose ends.

Still, I didn't find it an uninteresting as I thought it would, even though some of the mysteries stay mysteries.

Star Splitter is an interesting look into the idea of "self" and how our experiences shape who we are. What would happen if you could be scanned and printed light years away? A human being. Jessica is about to figure out what that will be like as she is going to be printed to meet her research parents on a faraway planet.

An example of a book that's not perfect but that overcomes its flaws to be greater than them. The writing is very tight and the prose is not wasteful. Very little of the story felt like it was unnecessary or a diversion. While I normally hate nonlinear storytelling it worked well in this book and kept in line with it's themes. I was even caught off guard a few times but the twists.

This book reminded me how I felt when I read as a kid. Philosophical story with a lot of consider, but still a strong story on its own with Likable characters. I felt angry at some characters decisions, and disgusted even, but still didn't hate them. Every character felt unique to themselves, fully realized and completely understandable even when they have maybe a few pages of actual screen time.

My main criticism would be that I feel a lot of the moral and philosophical elements of the book are less murky than the book would have you believe, and my the end it's really abandoned any pretenses about raising questions anyways. It's just straight up telling you what to think about it.

Regardless, great book. So rare a book makes me feel so many things and so invested.

On top of that, a book with a female lead what's romance wasn't a main consideration; a male lead character who doesn't automatically get pov and doesn't steal focus; and he doesn't develop a crush on the female lead! Almost unheard of.
