One thing I can’t deny is that this book has good bones, the premise of this book is a story that deserves to be told in any form of media available to us.

But did it feel a bit rushed to me? Absolutely.

Did I enjoy this? It was fun, if only a bit underdeveloped

Will I be reading book 2? Oh absolutely.

While featuring a lot of (justified) fear around being undocumented and deported, this book also has a ton of complex fantasy world and some fascinating character development. Great fun.

It was a fascinating fantasy book about loving yourself despite the systems around you trying to destroy you. But yet, quoting Harry Potter, whose author would rather you not be your authentic self. So I loved this book so much and became very attached to the characters. Then the Harry reference would take me out of it. But overall, totally an amazing YA book that I recommend reading. There’s so much there about the systems and fighting back while coming of age.

I really enjoyed this. I have never read anything like it. Check it out if you like YA Fantasy and are interested in Argentinian mythology.

What an incredible story. Beautifully written. Garner takes her readers on a journey that at first seems similar to Harry Potter, as she proclaims in the endnote and book preview. What we discover is so much more. The students are on the brink of a revolution
of gender, sexuality, and documented status.
. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book had such political heft wrapped up in charm. I didn’t see some of the plot twists, but one is easy to guess, especially if you speak Spanish. I love the bilingualism of this book, the rich intertextuality and exploration of belonging to two cultures, without being able to claim ownership of one. Septibol, the descriptions of the school and Lunaris, and the real and fun group of friends make this a world I would gladly dive into any day.
