A huge thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for the digital ARC 'Girl on Fire' written by Alicia Keys and Andrew Weiner, with absolutely phenomenal illustrations by Brittney Williams.

I grew up with old superhero comics, and have always loved and collected comics, and graphic novels.
And... Lolo just might be my new favourite superhero!
Everything about this graphic novel I loved... and it was released just in time to become an early birthday gift to me... from me.

I already sent the graphic novel synopsis to my Department Coordinator, with the text "we must get this for the book room! (somehow)"
'Girl on Fire' is perfect for reluctant readers, and it's also such a powerful coming-of-age story. There are so many every day struggles featured that would be so relatable to students. Plus, I always enjoy having strong female main characters in things I read, and Lolo definitely was that.

My issue isn’t that I didn’t resonate with the story. There was just a lack of character development/growth and the ending felt rushed. I was certain there was going to be a cliffhanger but they did their best to wrap it up when so many plotlines that were introduced (like the mother) had only really just begun. I feel like it highlights issues within our communities and then glosses over them instead of addressing them. Addressing these issues isn’t a requirement in storytelling, but it just left me feeling like this is just the way things are, and even with magic and gifts you can only make things better for yourself and not for your community.

I really enjoyed this one! I would have liked to know more teens/peeps with superpowers and also get to know how some would get those while others don't. But a good book, also about real issues (police peeps not caring if they have the right person or not and being very aggressive, drugsdealing, "tax" aka protection money, threats, and other things). I loved Lolo's family and I loved how despite everything that happens she stays strong, tries to help people, tries to figure out her superpowers. She was a really good and fun MC. I also really liked her best friend, she was so sweet and I loved the bond they had. Also liked Runt and seeing him try to figure out life and where to go and what is the best side. And Lolo's dad was awesome, loved how hard he worked, and also helped others.
The art was also fun, I loved how Lolo's powers were shown.
All in all, very happy I found this book!

There were a couple of plot conveniences throughout and the artwork was relatively basic, but the overall story was generally enjoyable.
