Enjoyable but not compelling. Loved the main character though and the mini end twist. Thought the explanation of what the culture had really been up to was a bit predictable and rushed though. Still good though!

An intelligent novel that evokes The Left Hand of Darkness and Ender's Game, although not as poignant as the former or as thrilling as the latter. Jerneau Gurgeh, master Culture game-player, is the primary human protagonist, while drones Flere-Imsaho and Chamlis-Amalkney, and citizens of Azad writ large play prominent roles throughout the narrative. Themes include moral imperative, gender importance, social responsibility, oppression vs coexistence, and plutocracy vs meritocracy.
Gurgeh journeys to the Empire of Azad to participate in its career- and life-defining game of the same name. Whoever wins becomes emperor, and others who fare well take prominent positions within the emperor's government. In playing the game, Gurgeh learns about the brutal, sexist nature of the Azadian society (where there are three genders, ostensibly male, female, and apex), which differs greatly from the Culture where notions of sexual orientation, crime, and occupation are largely nonexistent.
The character of Gurgeh falls somewhat flat, but the layered, complex story, excellent worldbuilding, and thought-provoking contrast between Culture and Azad make for an excellent science-fiction novel.

Отменная фантастика, образец того, как писать НФ: заводной сюжет, продуманный ГГ с ясной мотивацией и эволюцией персонажа, экзотические декорации, зарисовки из жизни будущего, оставляющие очень много воображению.
Вообще говоря, я немного сомневался, читать ли, хотя очень люблю Бэнкса (но большую часть читал в детстве и забыл уже). Сомневался потому, что синопсис был странным: чувак любит играть в настольные игры, и летит на другую планету, чтобы сыграть в самую сложную игру (настолько сложную, что победитель турнира становится местным императором). Ну кажется, что там может быть увлекательного? О, как я ошибался! Во-первых, все это помещено в многослойную галактическую интригу. Во-вторых, написано про игру так, что увлекательно следить за каждым поворотом, а само описание идеально держит темп: то разворачиваясь на несколько страниц описания пары ходов (и мыслей героев), то проскакивая на полном ходу через несколько партий, когда случается экшон. В-третьих, оно просто классно написано: за переживаниями героя интересно следить, как и за его открытием для себя чужой культуры.
Ну и наконец, это просто мастерски написано по яызку и структуре: все твисты в нужных местах, а темп повествования строится под сюжет идеально, без провисания.
В общем, первая часть цикла про Культуру (цивилизацию будущего) Consider Phlebas был идеальным зубодробильным экшеном, это - роман интриг. Буду продолжать дальше чтение серии. И вам советую того же!

this is my mums favourite book and it was SO FUN. why on earth there were so many dicks in the story is beyond me, but i learnt not to question it. i did find the alien names confusing. but it was totally fun, political and humourous at times. although i needed to get back to my lit fic ASAP so i could stop guessing who was machine and who was human x
