It was OK, but not the greatest writing. Somewhere between a good Senior thesis and a multi-part Rolling Stone article. I'm not certain who the intended audience is--NORML members, I think. It flops back and forth between purple thesaurus over use and colloquialisms.

"What follows will be a fairly high-altitude flyover of the Boschian terrain below, though it also will descend to limn the horrors"

"they now did their vying, courtesy of the NRA, with big-time weaponry."

I am a huge fan of OR Books and the topics they bring to light. _A Narco History_ is an excellent book to get a grasp on where the US declared Drug War comes from and how it has destroyed the lives of the people of Mexico.

From 100 years ago till now, the authors describe how failed policies in the US and Mexico have led to the current situation. The extent of lawlessness in regions in Mexico is staggering to me. The amount of corruption is staggering. By some definitions, Mexico is a failed state. The police across the country has been remade a number of times in the previous decades to no avail to stamp out the corruption.

With the US market continuing to operate, the Mexican cartels will continue to supply the demand. The "war on drugs" is to conduct violence to stop the supply, with the thinking that will stop the problems in the north. But it is the demand that needs to be fixed. Educate people about drugs, treat those with addiction and improve the lives of the poor will go much further to solve the drug problem then sending the military after the kingpins.

Read this book to learn about what is happening in Mexico and the root cause of it all.
