(A copy of this review can also be found here: beautifulilies.wordpress.com/2018/04/05/dare-not-linger-the-presidential-years-by-nelson-mandela-and-mandla-langa/).

It's always difficult finishing the works of someone who has since passed, but Mandla Langa does a great job. That said, Dare Not Linger does still rely heavily on factual information which is in complete juxtaposition to the emotion in Long Walk to Freedom.

I would recommend this biography more for people who are heavily invested in politics, particularly that of South African politics. I know little about South African politics, so in this sense, Dare Not Linger was somewhat difficult for me to read and fully comprehend.

His collaborator took Mandela's notes for a book about his Presidency and put this together. Again fascinating to hear his thought processes and to learn more about this fascinating country. Probably not as interesting to someone who doesn't know so many people continually impacted by decisions and policies from that time. Sad to see how some of his progressive ideas have been subverted with less statesmanlike leaders.

Admittedly, I don't know much about South African history (which was part of the reason I wanted to read this book) and I haven't read Long Walk to Freedom either. If I had prepared myself more, this book probably would have made more sense. The book packs so much information in (names, dates, places, organizations, structures) that this was another slightly longer, almost textbook-esque of a read. Inspiring to learn about Mandela's work to re-structure a post apartheid South Africa

This is an ARC giveaway from Goodreads.com. Mandela's Presidential years are reviewed in this work. A first draft of ten chapters by Mandela are the basis for this work. Other coworkers and speeches from Mandela fill this out. Adrian Lester who narrates the audio book does an impersonation of Mandela in the sections when he reads his own words.

As always, I am at awe of Nelson Mandela and his character and the change he has made to his country. I found this biography format a bit dry in that a lot of the facts went over my head, but overall I understand the progression of this text. The best parts were Nelson Mandela's original writings and the transcripts of some of his speeches.

This book has great insight on South Africa and is highly informative and inspiring.

I definitely recommend his autobiography 'Long Walk to Freedom', as that is amazing.

Dare Not Linger reads like an unedited documentary. Raw material awaiting refinement to metamorphosize into something better but because you have seen it in its most primitive form its allure is extinguished.

So what makes this particular biography such a pain to read? It is based on personal interviews and briefings with Nelson Mandela as well as an unfinished memoir made by the man himself. It is haphazard and retains no comprehensive structure. The narrative is ordered but a hot mess. Nonetheless it provides some interesting snippets in Mandela's life outside prison and also provides a rare insight into his politics.

Good for historians; not for amateurs.

I expected this book to be more from Nelson’s point of view. I was excited to see this book and couldn’t wait to read it. I was disappointed by the book and it was hard to get into. I was really hoping for a true second volume to a “Long Walk to Freedom.”

Great book, but it is very dry. Putting it aside for the time being.
