Had to read this again after approx 20 years. Some of the interactions between male and female characters are a bit odd from a modern perspective. But I still loved it.

I enjoyed the creative world building and plot line. I also liked Lessa. I liked that she was clever, strong-willed, and inquisitive. I did not like F'lar at first, he was insensitive,  arrogant, and slightly misogynistic. However, he did improve throught the book and eventually grew on me.

The one one glaring issue I had with this book was
the unaddressed rape of Lessa by F'lar during the Dragon mating flight. She was given no warning about what might happen during this time and was mostly unaware of what was happening to her body because her mind was "riding with Ramoth". This unwitting and non-consenual sex was basically rape. And F'lar even admitted as much in the book yet never addressed what happened or apologized. He was supposedly unhappy with how things had gone, but only because she wasn't respond to him the way he wanted.

The writing itself had an undercurrent of patriarchy which was also unpleasant. But I found Lessa to be an admirable protagonist despite that.

Wow what a beautiful book. The writing was so lyrical and beautiful that you need to read it slowly to savor each word. The descriptions were stunning and even the overall tone fit the settings so I really felt like I was in Pern. I was really in awe with this world full of dragons and dragonriders. Now I desperately want my own dragon to ride. The bond between dragon and rider is intense and unlike anything else I've read about. The characters were well developed and interesting. I loved how strong Lessa was, and her sass and determination were really fun to read. I have such a crush on F'lar and I can't wait to see more of them (and F'nor and Manora) in future books! This is a classic book that will withstand all of time.

I enjoyed it, but I also agree with the reviews that this book is rather sexist.

Not only did the author create a world with an incredibly sexist society, where the women literally live belowstairs and the men yell down shafts at them when they want food, but the vast majority of women are portrayed as brainless and spineless nitwits.

Despite this nonsense, and some other super sketchy stuff relating to sexual consent that would absolutely not fly in today’s society, I did enjoy the overall story. Probably won’t be picking up the rest of the series though.

This is the gazillonth time that I have read Dragonflight since the late-1990s.  This series is a "comfort-read" for me.

Dragonflight, while my first introduction to Pern, in retrospect it is not my favorite book in this series.  It is clearly a compliation of novellas and clearly does not have the depth of history and lacks some internal consistency with the remainder of the series as it developed.

Additionally, there are some dated issues (it was published in 1968), so yes the sexist stereotypes exist.

So, despite its flaws, I will continue to return to this universe, and read yet again the stories of Pern and its dragons, because McCaffrey captured something beautiful.

I was so excited to finally get to read this series. After reading half the way through, I realized that I just didn't care at all-the characters were not particularly likeable and the story was just not my cup of tea.
