I struggled with this book for quite a while, because the portrayal of trauma and mental illness is really intense. I don’t think this next bit is a spoiler, just clearing up a way I eventually figured out I’d been misreading the book, but just in case:

I found that if I took that character as he was in any given chapter, instead of subconsciously waiting for him to “get better,” the intensity was more manageable and the story resonated more.
