Hearts are healed and mysteries are solved in J.D. Tyler’s Cole’s Redemption, the newest book in her Alpha Pack series. Zander Cole is the pack’s healer who was struck deaf in one of the previous books in the series. A little warning to readers- you can read this as a standalone book however I would not recommend it. There is a lot of back story that you lose if you haven’t read the other books. Zander is trying to find his place in the pack and adjust to his hearing loss when his fight with the white wolf Selene results in his being mated to her.

Selene is there to get revenge on her father; someone that she believed is responsible for her mother’s death so she has her own demons to fight apart from being mated to Zander. I really liked the interactions between Zander and Selene, and I like the way that both were able to show vulnerability while also finding their strength together. The one thing that I didn’t like was all the secondary characters and storyline that pulled away from the main characters. This distracted from the Zander and Selene and although I understand that you want to include the other characters it was a bit much at times. Despite this the book was interesting, bringing new characters to the series and an ending that helps set up the next book in the series.

Cole’s Redemption, Alpha Pack #5, by J.D. Tyler
Grade: B

“They’re called Alpha Pack, and they all have special abilities, like seeing the dead of telekinesis or whatever, even before they were turned into shifters. Now they protect the world for just about every paranormal threat you can imagine - vampires, witches, demons, Unseelie, Slaugh. You name it. they’ve probably battled it.”

Selene Westfall is on a mission to find the father that abandoned her when she needed him most and take her revenge for her mother’s death. After finally tracking her father to the Alpha Pack compound she is ready to make her move but she never expected one of her father’s men to intercept her and change both of their lives forever. Selene now finds herself as Zander’s bond mate and her whole world flipped upside down. Everything Selene grew up believing has been questioned and she doesn’t know who to believe. Selene finds herself only able to rely on Zander and she soon finds herself doing everything to protect this stranger she has grown to love.

Zander Cole is trying to find his place in the pack after a horrible injury left him deaf and his gift of healing in question. A mistaken bite leads to Zander finding his bond mate which leads to his injuries being healed. Selene is everything Zander has ever wanted but when evil threatens the pack Zander makes choices that could rip apart the new bond he’s formed. Zander wants to spend forever with this woman who has stolen his heart but his duties and loyalty to his pack brothers could change all that forever.

I have a weird relationship with this series since I loved book #2, hated book #3 and skipped book 4 completely. I don’t know why but I decided to give this series a second chance but I am so happy that I did. Selene and Zander were a breath of fresh air for this series and I have a lot of hope that the following books will be just as great. In the first four books there was a lot of magic going on and not as much focused on the actual werewolves and I feel like this book is going in a much better direction than it has been.

I loved Selene from the moment she was introduced. She is very damaged but covers that with a hard shell that cracks little by little with Zander’s help. Zander has been one of the guys who I’ve been dying to get his own book and Selene was perfect for him. Zander is very sweet but is also very much an alpha male who protects what is his. The two sides of him were really great and not often seen in this romance world of either sweet guys of alpha-holes. These two have a perfect balance together and some smoking hot chemistry that kept me reading late into the night.

I have once again fallen under the spell of J.D. Tyler and I am so happy I gave this series a second chance. I am so excited to see what the future holds for the Alpha Pack, especially with all of the new vampire friends they’ve made. I am really hoping for Nick’s book next and I’m hoping that this series just keeps getting better and better.

This is the fifth book in the Alpha Pack series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the other books first. The author does a good job of filling in back stories, but there are several stories that carry, build, and change through the series. I did really like this book, though. Probably my favorite of the series so far. Magic, werewolves, treachery, fighting, and sex mix in a good combination. It’s a good crossover book for moving from regular sci-fi to paranormal romance. The story line is fairly original. I particularly liked the depth to which the main characters were developed – it is very easy to relate and connect to the characters. The author does a great job of building and maintaining character depths, connections, and interactions. I am impressed at how she connects the books and maintains such strong secondary story lines across several books and changes to the story line. She also does a good job of setting up future story lines in a way that makes readers want to read the next book(s).

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

This is the fifth book in this series. If you’ve read my previous reviews for this series, you know that I’ve been a little iffy about this series. I’ve really enjoyed many of the characters and I love the idea of former SEALs turned werewolves. The psychic gifts are a nice original touch. I like the different characters like the Fae prince, Blue and the gremlin. The stories have just never pulled me in that last bit. I think this one did pick up a bit. The author focused more on the the arc of the overall series and less on gratuitous sex scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good sex scene in a story, I read a ton of erotica, but these stories just didn’t do it for me. This story was better.

Here we have Zander Cole, the Alpha Pack’s healer. He was injured in an earlier book and lost his hearing. Zander has had a hard life. His father treated his healing ability like a curse and treated him like a freak. He has a very sweet nature, where healing others is more important to him than even his own health.

Selene Westfall, the commander’s estranged daughter, is convenience that her father killed her mother and then ran from their pack. She has come to the Alpha Pack territory to get revenge on Nick. She has tons to learn about her past and her father which she barely knows. She also has her own psychic gift that she was not aware of.
My biggest beef with this story, in particular, was the healing that was done to fix the hearing issue with Zander. It wasn’t believable to me and was fixed to quickly. This was something that really drove me to want to read this book and the resolution to this issue just didn’t pull me in.

The ending of the story pulled me in as it got me really wanting to read the next book in the series even though I’ve only been giving this series 3 flaming hearts or so across the entire series. This series amazes me how I’m pulled in to read each new story even though I’m overly impressed with each individual story. The series as a whole pulls me in. This is a series where the secondary characters are better than the main characters in each story.

I liked the narration better in this story better than the ones in the past. I have no idea why, but it just seemed better to me. Maybe it was that I liked the story a little more, so it pulled me in more. I don’t think the narration made the story better or worse.

What I loved about this book: Zander Cole. Cole has had it rough since becoming a wolf shifter. He has had unique abilities since a young age and with the werewolf attack they only became more prominent. He is a valuable member of the team because he is able to heal his fellow soldiers. Without caring about himself Cole will use his powers to heal those in need even though every time he does, it is killing him a little more.
Selene is the long lost daughter of the Alpha Packs Commander, Nick Westfall. Years before, heartache and tragedy hit the Westfall family causing Nick to leave his daughter in the care of his brother. Lies and half-truths told to her her entire life made Selene hate her father. With hated filling her heart she searches him out but during the would-be attack Cole saves Nick's life. Accidentally forming a mate bond with Selene, Cole decides that for him it's not something he wants to dissolve. Setting out together to learn the truth about her father's past they work together to save her heart and to save his life.

This is the first book by Tyler I've read. I really liked the world. The Alpha Pack is interesting and I enjoyed learning about the different members. The suspense plot was interesting and kept the story moving forward.

Something about the romance bothered me. I can't quite put my finger on what. Maybe it was how fast they fell into each other without seeming to have much of a connection? Or maybe it was the fated-mates thing? I'm not entirely sure. I just had a hard time connecting with that part of the story.

I've got only one remark: The sex scenes are turning blander by the book. I actually skipped them.
