A gift from Cara, so it automatically was a very special read. I started listening to the audiobook too halfway through, which was incredibly enjoyable with Mark and Jay reading. This is a lovely reflection on an even lovelier sibling relationship, which while unrelatable at times for me, still resonated with me about aspects of not only my relationships with Ca and Peter, but also with others and myself. Found myself writing things down to think more about later and chuckling in the process

I’m a fan of the authors’ shows so was intrigued by the premise of their memoir. Sadly, I found it disjointed and fairly dull. There was no structure to the chapters and it was unclear who was writing at any given time (it would say “I” yet no indication of which brother was writing). It felt more like them going through couples therapy than a fully formed book. I found the earlier chapters about their childhood interesting, but otherwise didn’t love it.

This book was so delightful. Definitely try the audiobook if you can get it.

I love their films, but their writing style and the content here just wasn’t for me. It’s chaotic and feels like 30 short blog posts.

I listened to this audiobook over about 3 weeks. My gosh, what a wonderful book! It’s part memoir, part guide to indy film making and part self help. It’s read in the authors (and their wives) voices. A great read for my aspiring indy film making son if I could just get him to actually read it. 🤓

This was a solid 4 star read, the tipping point to 5 is the sense I would definitely read it again, have already recommended it on and the over arching sense of honesty the book holds. On one hand in 2020 hearing men speak to their emotions shouldn't be unusual but alas I think it still is. The Duplas brothers do it here with such apparent ease that it was refreshing and insightful.

This was a sweet little glimpse into making it in Hollywood in a roundabout way, and the audio book banter was fun. It felt like it was 5 different books shuffled together - which was okay but sometimes clunky and repetitive. However, it did make me want to go and dig into more of their material.

Holy shit - these two fuckers tricked me into feeling my feelings!! I sobbed through the last two essays and was legit shocked when it happened. Highly highly highly recommend for mamas trying to raise emotionally mature boys.

A real mixed bag here.
Some advice on making indie and low budget films, some examples of scripts that came to nothing and short stories that they didn’t know what to do with.
There’s also just some opinions on what films they love and why (made me desperately want to rewatch American Movie, too).
Sadly it does feel like a book written by two talents who were offered a book deal, rather than something they came up with, so at times it does feel rushed and sketchy.
Works best when it’s two very close brothers talking about the joys and frictions of working so closely together for their whole careers. And their love of film really shines through.
And My Sister’s Sister is an amazing piece of work. So there’s that, too.
