“You are the last to know that everyone else sees you as Other.”
I actually loved this so much that I requested a special order through my indie bookstore!
This collection has poems from so many incredible writers - Elizabeth Acevedo, Samira Ahmed, Hala Alyan, Safia Elhillo, Ada Límon, Ocean Vuong, Erika L. Sánchez, Javier Zamora & more.
It’s genuinely too hard to pick favorites because they were all so impactful 😭 I was in awe of how each poem was a visceral gut punch to the heart/soul, and will be thinking about these poems for a while. I highly recommend this, and can’t wait to get a physical copy (read a library loan).
Graphic: Hate crime, Police brutality, Grief, Racial slurs, Racism, Religious bigotry, Violence, Classism, Cultural appropriation, War, Colonisation, Deportation, Genocide, Cursing, and Xenophobia

“For the white students in my major, / Ethnic Studies is like a free study abroad program / that doesn’t require that they bring their baggage with them. / A privilege that is easy for them to close in their textbook / at the end of class.”

My oh my. What took me so long to read this collection? I'm so glad that I've made it a personal mission to have a book of poetry ongoing. This one gave me a lot to digest as it is the immigrant/refugee experience from so many perspectives. There are a variety of cultures, religions and countries represented.
I read the poems in order. When I finished a poem, I would jump to the biographical information in the back of the book. I have many authors and collections I would like to check out.
The collection is aimed at Young Adults, but I think this is a good one for anyone interested in considering America from this unique perspective of being an insider, but never really being embraced as one of the family.
Some favorites:
"Dear America" by Sholeh Wolpe
"On Being American" by Samira Ahmed
"On Listening to Your Teacher Take Attendance" by Aimee Nezhukumatathil
“Muslim Girlhood" by Leila Chatti
"Master Film" by Solmaz Sharif
"History Lesson" by Jeff Coomer
"Frank's Nursery and Crafts" by Bao Phi
"Off-Island Chamorros" by Craig Santos Perez
"A New National Anthem" by Ada Limon
"Mama" by Emtithal Mahmoud
"Ode to Enclaves" by Chrysanthemum Tran
"Ethnic Studies" by Terisa Saigatonu
"Las Casas Across Nations" by Gabriella Gutierrez by Muhs
"Refugees" by Brian Bilston

"And what they think is rebellion is, in truth, survival
Because if you stay silent one second longer, the anger
surging through your blood will engulf you in flames."
"I'll never stop stealing back whats mine.
I promise, i wont forget again"
"I wish you would ask of the memories before my identity became political"
This was a really good collection of poems, very relatable. Some that stood out to me were Choi Jeong Min, Domesticity, The poet at fifteen, Mama, When the man at the party said he wanted to own a filipino, Ethnic studies, Dear America, and many more..

Poems from various immigrant poets can be read through this book. Family, culture, journey, identity, etc are just a few of the several themes that shine through these heartfelt pieces.
Some of my fav poems from this collection:
Ethnic Studies by Terisa Siagatonu
ode to the first white girl i ever loved by José Olivarez
Refugees by Brian Bilston
Undocumented Joy by Yosimar Reyes
A perfect book to have in your classroom and one in which you can take some time to dive into these poems and have thoughtful conversations with your students.
