I'm just so into this story--especially the little conversations and sweet moments between husband and wife, parent and child. The drama is fun, too, and there is always a lot of it. However, what keeps me interested is the minutia of everyday life in the past--how they ate, the dangers they faced, the thoughts that troubled them, how they made a living, the diseases and the cures. It's all fascinating to me. I am enjoying watching Jamie develop into his role as a father and as a leader in books four and five, and I'm fascinated with all things science that Claire brings to the story. I enjoy seeing Claire finding contentment in her role as an early American settler in the wilderness, and I enjoy watching her as a parent to an adult child and as a grandmother. I also appreciate the maturity of Claire and Jamie's relationship--the small tender moments of mutual respect and quiet appreciation.

ahhh...another book finished in the Outlander Series.

The Fiery Cross is book 5 and yet it is fresh. Yes, I feel as if I am reading about familiar "friends" but the reading is fresh. Claire and Jaime's story continues to draw me in. Seriously, just the other day- work was so incredible hectic that at my lunch break I gobbled my food down in 15mins...this meant I went all day (16 hours) without reading. I realized, upon falling alseep, I did not get my Claire and Jaime fix. Yep, I love reading their story...even If I only read 15 mins...it is enough to have me thinking of them and the time they are living in.

The time...D. Gabaldon never ceases to amaze with her writing- she does a great job of giving me (the reader) almost all the senses of living during an age I am unfamiliar. She weaves the senses of sight, smell, touch and taste effortlessly into the story. Details of sickness...simple illness of the cold is woven into the story...simple, yet it gave me a huge feeling that these characters are real. The other example is with a woman's "courses" (the word Jamie uses)...a woman's time of the month - her period. The author gives a snippet of how women have to deal with this monthly "friend". I found this to be intriguing...why? I am forever in awe of how women managed before the conveniences I am accustomed to where made available. There are many more details that the author weaves into the story that I find very satisfying to giving me the senses...in bringing Claire, Jamie, Brianna and Roger to life.

This book didn’t have the same kind of cohesive main plot thread in the way previous books did, but almost felt like a collection of anecdotes and stories from their life in the colonies. While the structure was a little different, I found it still very enjoyable. My favorite moments in these books are the little hilarious moments and the silly, non life threatening problems they navigate, and the insightful and philosophical conversations they have, especially Claire & Jamie. I think it felt like a relief after the very tumultuous drama of books 3 & 4. I want to say this book is more “peaceful” but at the same time what I would call one of the top 5 most horrible things that’s happened to a character in this series happened in this book, so do with that what you will lol. Somehow Claire and Jamie’s relationship continues to be the most interesting relationship in every book and I never get tired of their poignant yet hilarious conversations.
Iconic moments include Jamie scheming to get the babies baptized when the priest gets arrested and Jamie asking Claire to give his sperm “a decent burial” after showing them to him under her microscope lmao

Not my favorite of the series so far, but definitely better than Voyager or whatever the third one is called lol. Roger's character development was truly beautiful, and I am very excited to see him grow and change even further. I think the next book is where I catch up with what I've seen of the show, so I am looking forward to that.
