Unusually for me I hadn’t read the blurb before launching into this book. However it is pretty much guaranteed that a Carol Van Natta book will engaging, fast paced and well written and this one was no exception to that rule. The author’s world building is very solid, enhanced with believable advanced technology and made colourful with political intrigue.

Taz and Rylando have a rescue mission to complete, lives to save, peril to overcome and innocents to protect. Great writing soon had me caught up in a plot that twists, turns and has an unexpected sting towards the end. I quickly found myself warming to Taz, she is an incredibly likeable and well rounded character. Rylando was also easy to warm to and I very much enjoyed reading their story.

The romance, in this, is very low key with most of the “falling in love” aspects occurring off page. The adventure – or should that be near catastrophe? – in this story is a vehicle that allows each character to realise the true depth of feelings they already have for the other protagonist. For me this felt more like a sci-fi adventure with a subtle hint of romance swirled on the top just to add colour to the final product.

Whilst the story can be read stand alone, you are missing out on some wonderful stories if you don’t read the whole series!

I read this book when it was part of Pets in Space 5. I was excited to return for another pet filled story in this universe. I really enjoyed this story. I liked the idea of a galactic search and rescue team. There are a few of the overarching themes with how the CPS handles things badly that show up in this story that people who read the series recognize, but it can easily be read as a standalone.

I liked the characters and seeing how they handled the situations. They were both likable and I liked how they interacted with the pets, other characters and each other. I just wished it could've been a bit longer so we could see what happens next. The romance mostly is a side plot line as the focus stays on the rescue plot line, but even with the romance staying on the side it is clear how much these two care about one another.

I loved the multitude of pets in this one. And there's even a pouch rat! I used to have pet rats and I love rats, so it was extra fun to see a rat play a role in this story. Besides that there are two doggos, two cats as well as a owl and a weasel. It was a fun mix of animals, although it took some time remembering all their names and who they were. I liked how they played an important role in the story as well. All in all this was a great science fiction story with plenty of pets as well as a romantic side plot line.
