Reaaaaaaally impressive from a POV/writing standpoint--the narrator is a total psycho who plays stupid, sort of like an evil Columbo--but deeply unpleasant to experience. The technical wonder wears off, even in such a short book, and you just want to be far, far away from all these people.

About as close to one star as a book can get. I’m not positive why I’m on the other side of the divide with this book. Seems popular. But this is not my first book by Thompson and it’s also not the first I’ve been completely underwhelmed by. The plot was nonsensical. The characters are ridiculously stupid. Actions are false. Dialogue is flat and moronic. And the whole experience is supposed to be shocking but comes across as no more than boring. I’m sure I’ll give Thompson another chance since he gets great press normally but I can’t recommend this book. Perhaps I’ve just started off with some of his worst books although I’m afraid that’s probably not the case. I’d skip this one and might ultimately recommend skipping Thompson completely.
