While a fun story, I am concerned by the negative and stereotypical depiction of Ziggy: a Jamaican American who says "Mon" practically every sentence, wears a Rastafarian hat and dreadlocks, has a large family and poorly kept home, and is shown as forgetful and unintelligent.

This is a satisfying chapter book mystery story about a group of fifth grade boys who build a clubhouse and solve mysteries after their beloved basketball court is vandalized. Set in Cincinnati, Ohio, the story features four African American boys through their adventures in their neighborhood. When the boys discover a box of bones buried by their new clubhouse, they decide to investigate and find out where the bones came from. Though the mystery is somewhat slight and solved without too much input from the boys, I loved that the characters are well fleshed-out for a chapter book series.

Hand this to kids who like realistic adventure stories.

My 5 year old LOVES this series - we read a chapter each night before bed.

A perfect mystery with realistic characters and a bit of black history too. Set in Ohio, four friends build a clubhouse and bury treasure only to discover a developer’s old crime over an old graveyard.

Once the mystery got started, this book got a little better, but the kids were such caricatures. I think a second or third grader would like this book, but great writing it is not.

I bothered to explain Chekov's gun to a six-year-old. Oh well. Still, a good and nice mystery that includes a dog so it's basically Scooby-Doo which is all that same six-year-old wants out of his media anyway.

It's hard to find a middle grade series with people of color, though this older series from Sharon Draper has been repackaged and republished. It's short and quick, and the series has a lot of promise.

This book was great. I really enjoyed the neighborhood setting and reading about the boys building their clubhouse and starting their club, complete with treasures.
I really like Sharon Draper. This book proves even further how great of a writer she is.

Great mystery for 8-12, or middle school kids who aren't yet strong readers.
